I still do a lot of sketches but I don’t have as much time to put them up. This one I may have done a while back. It’s the kind you start not knowing what you’re doing when doodling as you wait for a meeting to start. I kept adding to it over time and lo and eventually finished it.

The image depicts these characters of an old story I made and hope to upload some time. There’s one little girl called Megan who can speak to machines, her “Grandpa” or guardian and this big robot called Orson. Here they are at some temple thats crumbling over. I think there’s a robot crab coming out of the wall but I may have not given my self space to draw that.

Some time ago I had this urge to endeavor in something a little bit more “meaningful” with mine talents. After a few false starts and wrong turns it seems I have something thats fits the aims to that intent.

Last year I was hired to do the illustrations on a US Constitution manuscript in the “for beginners” series. The work resulted in something like 136 black and white illustrations and the color cover featured here. If you have ever done book work you know I am by no means financially rich (well maybe if a billion copies are sold I’ll get some kind of money). It was though an endeavor of my dedication and principle.

This book required a lot of late night work but it was fun to learn and research about a document that some politicians often like to treat as sacred text when in fact it is a contract between people experimenting in freedom while avoiding anarchy and monarchy. A document that is to be written and re-written to fit the changing times and issues of the day until the day the country (as we know it) is no more which will hopefully be a long ways from now.

Fun things you learn, our founding fathers did not really know what they were doing and some believed the document would not last very long. It took a lot of work to let women vote. Bankers and rich people have always been influencing the way this thing is drafted. Giving corporations the rights of people (except people can die and are not composed of thousands of individuals) is not a new concept and it has been debated time and time again.

Regardless of your political inclination(this books skews a little to the left) it is wise to heed the lessons of history. We may not have “Kings” and may not be likely “invaded” anytime soon but the US does have to worry about how much corporate and foreign wealth set the rules that define our life and our health.

These corporate concerns never amount to much more than short term accumulation of wealth and for the few kings of our modern time.

You can find the book in amazon and through other retail methods.

These are some of the characters I developed for the actual book. The Australian platypus was fun to draw since it was an unmistakable foreigner anthropomorphic character. The lizard guy too allowed me to draw scales. Hiding his arms inside his poncho he would be easily mistakable for a snake. I think its good to keep audiences guessing.

For the Chinese immigrants I used siamese cats. The wild west drew so many types of people one of the fun parts of developing characters was to try to match animals that would represent these countries.

On a side note. My abuelito passed away today. He was like a second father and will be missed. Hope we can all live to be 96.

Cryptoludology: Why not a successful FPS for little children?

The other day I ran into a game design concept which I had jotted down long ago. Soon after I took time to consider the idea a little bit more.

You can read my thoughts on the “mythical” First-Person Shooter for kids at Gamasutra’s design blogs.

Cryptoludology? That was just a fun word to make up. Making games and comics you’re always doing that. Unless we’re attacked by Squirrelzilla, I will see you next time.

While in college I would draw characters for stories based in the “Coyote” universe (that’s the nickname for the main character). These are some of those guys. The guy on the bottom right is based on the Lou Diamond Phillips character in the movie Young Guns.
