Special Report is almost done. I really liked working on this story because it allowed me to do TV panels like those you find in Dark Knight Returns.

I did letter by hand and was able to have a lot more text than I usually put down for the average character word balloon. There’s still a lot of work to do on my lettering. Good grief. Lots of work to do all over the place.

However this story is certainly fun to do. It was also a new style for character designs which many a comic artist have responded positively to. Not that this is all I would draw but it certainly gives me an idea of what works for folks.

One of my favorite bits about this page is the “International Space Station”. I think I heard Colbert or John Stuart tell a joke about how “International” actually means the few nations who have a space program. I think its 3 or 4 (US, Russia, Japan and China?).

Does everyone really have access to this tech? It’s not like North Korea has a set space of station keys for the day they are able to send a man into space. Think about it.

The battle rages on!

At this point in the story it was starting to get really hard to come up with unique cutaways for the reporter.

I really could have had these monsters fighting and causing destruction but that was rather of theme.

Why does Mothra fight Godzilla?

A giant Butterfly vs. a Fire breathing Dinosaur seems rather one sided.

That was a question driving this piece of the story. You get to see how I feel about it.

Turns out Mothra was an Idea to capitalize on the success of Godzilla much like other Toho monsters such as Baragon, Rodan and Manda.

You would watch Batman fight Dracula wouldn’t you (this actually happened in comic and animated form).

There was even an episode of Ultraman where he fought something that looked very much like Godzilla but damn that licensing it wasn’t just quite Godzilla.

Also the Humming Bird is called Birdura in case your wondering. Run the Spanish word “Verdura” through BabelFish and see why I think it’s funny.
