Okay it’s time to get serious about this story. Here’s what happened. For my Monstrosity project I wanted to make a comic that had lots of little stories in which I could try different types of stories and different type of styles.
Territorial is the first story of the book and it is all about fighting. Here are some core stats.
- Drawn in 9×12 Bristol with blue line pencil and crow quill. This is the same process I used for Mustang Hops (Hobo Detective) . Which for those who missed that means I can scan one page in one pass with my small legal sized scanner. Blue line helps me do all the post production that much faster. Crow quill is great for doing those action lines you see much latter.
- I wanted BIG monsters just beating the tar out of each other. By big I mean these monsters are so big they could probably see the horizon curve a little.
- I wanted non traditional monsters for this book and somewhat clever names. For the underwater monster I was thinking a giant super starfish. The outer space one had to look very alien. Technically it doesn’t have a head but the thing on the top kind of looks like one to us. I like to think of it a a 360 degree biological radar antenna. Auriga is a constellation name that jumped at me as a fitting monster name. Bermuda is obviously filled with lore about the mysterious triangle but did you know there is a 8,605 meter trench(8th deepest in the world) that extends to Puerto Rico? I modeled some of the buildings after el Condado in Puerto Rico.
- I wanted to try to get in outlandish sound effects and those dynamic comic panel layouts that I didn’t use in my previous 2 books.
Now remember I did not invent Kaiju and I owe a lot if inspiration to many many many sources. Some that come to mind include:
- Negadon the Monster from Mars – The Negadon Monster does a great job at looking alien I love that. Did you know this 3o minute movie is on HULU? Did you also know that it was mainly all done by one guy in 3D studio max? He’s making a new one I hear.
- Evolution(the Movie) – This came out in 2001 and was directed by the folks from Ghostbusters. It features some great creatures one of which made a decent enough impression for me to finally decide on what these creatures would look like.
- I leave you with the 3D Godzilla that made a cameo in the movie Always: Sunset on Third Street 2.
